Game Setup

Before the Start of the Game

Unpackage the board, cards, dice, player pieces, and sand clocks

Place Crisis Cards on the game board in the marked places.

Divide the Community Cards by color and place them around the board.

Start of the Game

Each player chooses a game piece to represent themselves

The youngest player goes first.

Each player gets a sand clock to track their time.

The first player rolls two dice and places their game piece on the spot of the board with a corresponding number.

If the player rolls a number which has more than one corresponding location, the player gets to choose where to place their piece.

The first player then collects a face down Community Card from the right side of the board that matches the color of the location number indicator.

Share the information on the card for as long as the sand clock indicates.

This concludes the first player’s turn. Then play continues clockwise.

Collecting Community Cards

As play proceeds, each player will accumulate Resource Cards, Knowledge Cards, and Trust Cards.

Occasionally, a Community Card will involve other players and other locations on the board.

Using the sand clock timer, read the card drawn out loud and resond appropriately.

When the time is up the turn ends and the player collects that card.

Resource Card

Some of the most emblematic landmarks are represented in the Resources card. Through work and activism, we help preserve, shape, ad rejuvenate these sites that mean so much to our community.

Trust Card

The foundation of the game and the philosophy behind civic participation is to build relationships based on trust. Together, we’ll take action to protect public values, raise awareness, and make systemic change.

Knowledge Card

You will find concepts related to social justice, higher learning, and Subject Matter Experts (SME) in this category. in civic participation, SME are fundamental for the successful outcome of the initiatives lead by city neighbors.

This is a great time to talk about each player’s experiences with the topic raised by the Community Cards. It’s okay to talk about a personal experience that is just funny for everyone or share information if a player is familiar with the concept.

Note each player only receives a Community Card if they roll a three through eleven.

Once a player has 3 cards of one color they must exchange them for the corresponding token.

The exchanged cards then go back into the bottom of the appropriate deck.

If a player rolls a two or twelve they must attempt to resolve a Challenge Card.

Solving a Challenge

Challenge Cards highlight a community issue relevant to Gainesville.

Once a player lands on City Hall, they may use that turn to resolve a challenge card.

The player reads the challenge card aloud then trades the number of tokens listed in the corresponding situation.

Players may share resources as long as each player has rolled to land on City Hall in the same round.

Each Crisis card has its own instructions and requirements to be resolved.

Note that each Crisis Card represents a real issue facing the city of Gainesville and our community. This might be a nice opportunity to discuss the crises raised by the Crisis Cards and to even brainstorm possible real world solutions. How can our community work to resolve these crises and what can we do as individuals?

Read the card aloud for the benefit of all the players

Each card will require a specific number of Resource, Knowledge, and Trust Cards/Tokens to resolve.

If the player has enough to resolve the Challenge Card:

The player returns the necessary Resource, Knowledge, and Trust Cards/Tokens to the bottom of each respective stack of cards face down.

Turn the crisis card face down to confirm that it has been completed.

If the player does not have enough to resolve the Challenge Card:

Play proceeds with the next player.

Game Resolution

Players win this game together, just as our city wins by working together.

The game concludes when all 4 challenge cards have been resolved within permitted time.
